Installing automated roller shutters, a shower seat, non-slip floor coverings, etc. Renovating your home as you begin to age can represent a significant budget. So, to help the elderly cope with these expenses, the government is considering a new form of assistance: MaPrimeAdapt'. And while the details of this scheme have not yet been officially unveiled, as the project is still subject to Emmanuel Macron's arbitration, the contours of this helping hand are now known.

We sum it all up in this little infographic 😊

According to Le Monde, which was able to read a memo signed by Emmanuelle Wargon, the French Minister for Housing, Brigitte Bourguignon, the French Minister for Autonomy, and Sophie Cluzel, the French Secretary of State for the Disabled, MaPrimeAdapt' would enable some 680,000 homes to be adapted over the next 10 years, at an estimated annual cost of 400 million euros.

The scheme is expected to reduce the number of falls by senior citizens by almost 20%, but is also designed to facilitate the process. A single platform will be set up, bringing together the various local and national aids already in place. (ANAH's "Habiter facile" scheme, pension fund assistance, tax credits, APA).

In practical terms, this new scheme is based on MaPrimeRénov': the more affluent the beneficiary, the lower the bonus, and vice versa. Thus, senior citizens with an annual income of less than €20,593 should benefit from up to 70% of the cost of the work. And for individuals in the top bracket, earning less than 25,000 euros a year, the subsidy will be limited to 50% of expenditure. The work ceiling has been raised to €15,000, making it easy to adapt a bathroom and its accesses.

In terms of beneficiaries, the government has broadened the scope to include seniors over 70, as well as people over 60 who have lost their independence (this must be certified by an occupational therapist).

In keeping with this mass-market approach, it also reintroduces the 25% tax credit for people who do not meet the age or income requirements.

In terms of eligible work, this covers all home and exterior improvements. A detailed list can be found in this article: MaPrimAdapt': List of eligible products

In order to limit the abuses we have seen with Action logement, several control mechanisms will be put in place:

  • A preliminary check of the craftsman will be necessary to ensure that he is in order. This is done online when the application is submitted on the
  • The work must also be supervised by an AMO (or an occupational therapist for beneficiaries over 60 with loss of autonomy).

In terms of timing, the platform for submitting applications will be open (initially locally) from September 2023. Ma Prime Adapt' should be launched on January1, 2024.
